Name: Regulus Arcturus Black.

Character Fandom: Harry Potter.

Canonical Point of Entry: Post-death, pre-series. His date of death, for game purposes, is 2 October 1980.

Physical Description: Regulus has short black hair that curls at the ends and, in contrast to his brother, dark blue eyes. His complexion, which was very pale when he first entered the village, is now that of a young man who spends a lot of time running around outdoors. (He does deliveries for the general store in Haurvatat, so this is pretty much the case.) His nose is thin, as is his face, and he has high cheekbones. His body is lean, rather than muscular. His left forearm, which once bore the Dark Mark, is now unmarked; the Mark was removed by Trance Gemini.

Background: Regulus was born 13 April 1961, the second son of Orion and Walburga Black, both of the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black. Regulus and his older brother Sirius were brought up strictly by old-fashioned parents who were adamant that their sons grow up to become sterling representatives of pureblood wizardry.

Regulus's father was indifferent to his younger son, mainly noticing him when Regulus misbehaved, and only then to deliver lectures and a few stripes with a belt. His mother was much more involved with the rearing of the boys, alternating between high standards and strict discipline, shouting, and, when truly angry, refusing to speak to the boys for days, even weeks, until they begged forgiveness for whatever wrong they'd done that had offended her. Kreacher, their house elf, worshipped the Black parents, and reported the very smallest infractions that the boys committed.

Although some would describe this as abusive, Regulus would not. He would say that he grew up in a strict family, or that his parents were stern. Most of the Blacks were similar to Orion and Walburga in temperament; until the village, Regulus considered his parents to be normal. Cold, perhaps--but normal.

Their upbringing affected the boys in different ways. Sirius learned to rebel against the family's demands. Regulus, seeing how harshly rebellion was punished, learned not to rebel at all.

The two boys were company for each other and allies against their parents for years. But then Sirius, at eleven went off to Hogwarts...and was Sorted into Gryffindor.

Mr. and Mrs. Black were furious. Determined that Regulus not end up in a house of halfbloods, Mudbloods and blood traitors, they prevented Regulus from writing to his brother and, as nearly as they could during holidays, from talking to him as well. Moreover, Regulus was held up as an example for his older brother to follow. By the time Regulus entered Hogwarts, a considerable amount of trouble had been stirred up between the two.

Regulus was Sorted into Slytherin, much to the pleasure of his family and the disgust of Sirius, who looked on this as a sign that Regulus was turning out to be just like the parents Sirius was rebelling against. The Hat, sensing the courage that Regulus would show later in life, did offer Regulus a place in Gryffindor, but Regulus, at eleven, was convinced that if he was Sorted into Gryffindor, his parents would, quite literally, kill him. And, most likely, Sirius as well. As he so often did, Regulus took the safe option.

Being Sorted into Slytherin wasn't entirely onerous; Regulus was a pureblood, and knew the philosophy of blood purity inside and out. He even believed it. Despite this, he ended up becoming friends with one of his brother's friends, a Muggleborn named Peter Pettigrew. The reactions to this were mixed. The Slytherins disapproved strongly; Peter's friends were baffled by the friendship. Despite this, the two remained friends for several years. (Regulus got a few Howlers about this, too.)

The friendship, however, sustained a serious blow in the aftermath of the Prank in Sirius's sixth year. After being goaded by Severus Snape for some time, Sirius told Snape to enter the passage beneath the Whomping Willow on the night of the full moon--the Willow concealing the path to the Shrieking Shack, where Remus Lupin transformed into a werewolf every month. James Potter saved Snape, who was furious at the nearly-fatal trick that had been played on him.

Regulus, though, knew nothing of this; all he heard through the school grapevine was that Sirius was in the worst trouble of his life. Though Regulus begged Peter, the older boy refused to tell him anything--because doing so could get Remus in trouble...perhaps even killed. Outraged that his friend was refusing to tell him about his brother, fifteen-year-old Regulus grew coldly angry with Peter and ignored him for the remainder of their time together at school.

Around this point, Regulus's family began getting more involved, politically, in supporting Voldemort. Regulus began hearing more and more about the need to back Voldemort, who favored wizarding tradition and stood against the change for the sake of change being wrought by halfbloods and Mudbloods (the Blacks never called them "Muggleborns" if they could help it). Voldemort, they said, would restore wizarding values and make the wizarding world great once more.

Regulus didn't care too much--it was just politics--but he did support Voldemort's ideals (or supposed ideals). He did believe in the greatness of wizards and wizarding tradition, and he did want the wizarding world to be great once more. And so many had joined Voldemort; doing so would probably help Regulus gain some useful connections in the future. Of course, his opponents claimed all sorts of savagery and cruelty about Voldemort and the "Death Eaters," as his followers were called, but that was just mudslinging...wasn't it?

And so, the day after he left Hogwarts---22 June 1979--Regulus joined the Death Eaters.

It didn't take long for Regulus to learn that was was said of the Death Eaters was not only accurate, it didn't go far enough. And that he was expected to threaten, torture and kill.

Regulus did so. He wasn't as enthusiastic as, say, his cousin Bellatrix, but he convinced himself that torture and killing were inevitable in a war, and that the world he was fighting for justified everything. While he never succeeded in casting Crucio, he became quite good at casting fire spells and other potentially lethal spells that weren't Unforgivables. He became an experienced soldier, ultimately killing thirty Muggles and Muggleborns.

Then, in May 1980, Regulus ran into Peter again. Peter, who was now a Death Eater and a spy--the latter thanks to his position in the Order of the Phoenix and Voldemort's Legilimency. (Reading a spy's mind eliminates any chance of the spy consciously lying to you.) And although they renewed their friendship, it didn't last long, for Peter, terrified of Voldemort and desperate to do whatever it took to save his life, gave in to the demands of the Dark Lord and the other Death Eaters, killing with ease.

Peter's actions brought home to Regulus just how far he himself had gone. He was disgusted. Although Regulus didn't stop killing or torturing, Voldemort noticed that his heart wasn't in it. He devised a trap for Regulus--one in which he'd have to prove his loyalty in a devastating way. Regulus was ordered to kill his brother.

Fortunately, at the time that Regulus was given this order, Sirius was away--perhaps undercover, perhaps not. Regulus never knew. Knowing that he couldn't kill Sirius, and knowing that this failure would mean his death, Regulus decided there was only one thing to do--use the time he had left to find Voldemort's weakness and exploit it.

Thanks to a few chance comments (Voldemort speaking of himself as the Heir of Slytherin, for example) and a good working knowledge of wizarding genealogy, Regulus figured out what family Voldemort was descended from. He also deduced, thanks to a comment from Bellatrix about Voldemort not having a heart, an intuitive leap, and the correct book of fairy tales, that Voldemort had put his soul elsewhere so that he couldn't die. From then, it was just a question of re-tracing the steps of young Tom Riddle, and discovering which things and places he valued. Due to the memory of the now-elderly Mrs. Cole, the former matron of Tom's orphanage, Regulus figured out the location of one Horcrux--the cave where Tom Riddle had once terrorized two children to the point where they weren't right in the head afterwards.

Getting in and out was no problem. Regulus simply Apparated to a rock near the cave, then Apparated to the mouth of the cave. Once he was past the cave's antechamber, which he had to open with some blood, he Apparated across the cave's underground lake to a small island. Then he merely conjured goblet after goblet, scooping poison from the basin in which the Horcrux was resting. When it became apparent that he still couldn't touch the Horcrux because the poison hadn't been drunk, Regulus called for Kreacher, bound him with spells never to reveal what had truly happened, provided him with a false story to tell if anyone mentioned his name...and commanded him to drink the poison.

The poison left Kreacher half-crazed. Regulus didn't care about this; it was of no importance to him. House elves had acted as tasters for poison from time immemorial. As far as Regulus was concerned, this was part of what house elves were for.

After all the poison was consumed, Regulus dismissed Kreacher. Once the house elf was gone, he removed the locket Horcrux from the basin and replaced it with another of approximately the same size and weight--one that had a very personal note for Voldemort. Then, Horcrux in his pocket, he Apparated back across the lake, made a second offering of blood, entered the antechamber and Apparated from the mouth of the cave to the back garden of Twelve Grimmauld Place.

Regulus tried repeatedly to destroy it, but to no avail. At last he put it in an uninteresting looking box, placed this in a chest of jewelry in a linen closet, and left. He headed for Flourish & Blotts in Diagon Alley, hoping that the booksellers would have a useful book on how to destroy Dark Magic items--something he hadn't been able to find in the entire Black library.

What he didn't know was that, during the time that he'd been in the cave, his absence had been noticed. Voldemort, fearing that Regulus had betrayed him by going to warn his brother (something Regulus hadn't considered, knowing that trying to warn Sirius off was the best way to guarantee that he'd place himself in danger), sent several squads of Death Eaters to find Regulus. All had orders to kill Regulus on sight for daring to disobey their Lord.

Regulus barely caught a glimpse of the first squad as he entered Diagon Alley. He fled, and kept on running for several days. At last, however, the Death Eaters caught up with him. After torturing him for some time--partly to find out if he had warned Sirius, and partly just to cause the traitor pain--the one of the Death Eaters stepped forward and murdered him with the Killing Curse. It was 2 October 1980. Regulus was nineteen.

As far Regulus was concerned when he appeared in Haurvatat, he had died only minutes ago. The last thing he recalled was a flash of emerald light. He'd cast that spell often enough, so he was rather surprised to find himself alive and breathing.

Marital Status: Married. On the sixteenth of December, 2007, Regulus married Menolly, Harper of Pern.

Powers and Abilities: Regulus has the normal powers of a Potterverse wizard. He's best at Charms and Astronomy, but by virtue of coming from a very Dark family where he was expected to learn such things, he also knows a fair number of Dark Arts spells. He possesses no unusual magical talents.

His wand is oak, ten and a half inches, with a dragon heartstring core.

He's a gifted artist, composer and musician. He sings in a pleasant but unremarkable tenor.

Personality: After eight months in the village, Regulus has grown considerably. Not being particularly pleased with the way his life was going even before his death, feeling deep guilt for the lives he took, and deciding that the village was his second and most likely his last chance, Regulus has focused on becoming the kind of person who wouldn't need his second chance.

While remaining proud of his heritage, he has learned a fair amount about Muggle history and Muggles, and no longer fears and mistrusts them as he once did. He is loyal to a number of people, not merely a few and not only those in his own family. He has learned, to his considerable astonishment, that he possesses both courage and cunning. Best of all, he's found that he still possesses the ability to love, and to be loved in return.
